The collection Fold comprises unique pieces and small series made from fine Japanese paper. The selected shoji paper is either all-white or a composition of carefully coordinated, hand-dyed colours. The combination of the objects’ clear lines and the material’s unique properties creates a harmonious interplay of light, colour and structure. Each creation embodies simple elegance and fine craftsmanship.

PAPER STRIPS
The individual strips are made of a three-layered Japanese paper composite. The shoji paper combines the traditional Japanese paper’s elegant material properties with high tear resistance, good light transmission, and high moisture resilience.

The shoji paper folds are coloured by hand.
WATER-BASED DRAWINGINKS
The high-quality, water-based inks are sourced from a well-established ink company with over 130 years of experience in ink-making techniques. The inks are primarily composed of renewable raw materials and natural binders, and are processed by hand.
The use of these drawing inks allows for the creation of playful colour compositions. This intentional break from classic shoji paper, which is traditionally natural or white, imbues selected FOLD objects with a dynamic and modern twist.

THE BASE
The lamp bases are crafted from solid lime wood. Carefully selected planks are joined and shaped into an octagon, creating a stable and sculptural foundation.
Each of the eight surfaces is hand-painted with fine high-quality colours, giving every base its own rhythm and character.
In combination with undyed white shoji paper shade, the lamp bases are made of solid oak, which has a more textured surface than lime wood, and are oiled in a monochrome finish.

ABOUT SHOJI PAPER
In Japan, shoji elements traditionally take the form of lightweight sliding doors, room dividers or windows. Shoji symbolise deep respect for natural materials and the harmonious blending of interior and exterior spaces — a basic principle of Japanese architecture. Shoji paper allows diffuse light to pass through, creating a soft, calm atmosphere. The material offers maximum translucency, low transparency and minimum thickness. It is usually white or natural white. Shoji paper is characterised by high tear resistance, as well as dimensional stability in changing climates. Thanks to these properties, elements made with shoji paper retain their shape, even if exposed to moisture. Shoji paper has been produced for over seven centuries, thus prevailing as a timeless material.
FOLD luminaires are available in white as well as various colour compositions.
Custom colours and designs can also be crafted upon request. To inquire about existing colour combinations, shapes and sizes, or propose an idea for a custom project, please reach out via: contact@heikebuchfelder.com Our production site is located in Berlin. We work closely with various local partners, both in the surrounding region and across Germany.
From hand-painting the shoji paper with ink to artfully folding it by hand and painting the massive lamp base — each object is made with great care.
